Netflix has suffered several costly outages in the past year. A hardware glitch prevented the company from shipping DVDs to customers for several days in August. A malfunction at the company in March also delayed shipments.
When Netflix announced on Monday that it has decided to raise the subscription prices for those receiving Blu-ray Disc titles--10 percent of its subscribers, according to the company--the predictable occurred: people lashed out, saying Netflix is gouging customers.
In what is likely an unrelated event, some users of the Netflix Player by Roku have complained for two weeks of receiving dramatically inferior video quality in the movies Netflix streams via the Roku box. Roku executives told me they suspect the source of the problem is Netflix's content distribution network (CDN). Netflix's Swasey said the company is investigating.
The timing of the breakdown was especially awkward because it occurred shortly after Netflix management had briefed industry analysts on plans to improve its customer service in an increasingly bitter battle with rival Blockbuster Inc.Lowering prices will erode Netflix’s profit — a sacrifice that the company is making in an attempt to regain market share from Blockbuster. The decision led to a further drubbing of Netflix’s already battered stock, which has plummeted by 38 percent this year.
The shares dropped as low as $15.62 early Tuesday, their lowest point since June 2005. The stock later rebounded, but still finished down $1.20 at $16.07.Hoping to retain more of its current customers while enticing new subscribers, Netflix is decreasing monthly fees by $1 on its two most popular plans to match Blockbuster’s prices for comparable Internet-only services.
Netflix has been having trouble signing up subscribers since late last year, when Blockbuster began giving its online customers the option of swapping DVDs at one of its stores instead of relying on the mail and waiting at least two days for another movie.“We are in a very competitive, large battle,” Reed Hastings, Netflix’s chief executive, said in an interview Monday after the company released its second-quarter earnings. “But we feel like we are still in a great position.”Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter believes Blockbuster may have exposed Netflix’s Achilles’ heel by aggressively promoting the convenience of Blockbuster stores to build its online service.
“Netflix has a broken model,” Pachter said. “They aren’t used to competition and now someone is competing against them very effectively.”Netflix ended June with 6.74 million subscribers, a decrease of 55,000 customers from April. It marked the first time Netflix’s total subscribers have declined from one quarter to the next since the service began renting DVDs through its Web site in 1999.
Blockbuster is expected to update its online subscriber count Thursday when it releases second-quarter results. The Dallas-based company ended March with 3 million subscribers after outstripping Netflix’s customer growth for two consecutive quarters. The gains haven’t helped Blockbuster financially. The company lost $49 million in the first quarter. Blockbuster last month indicated it might try to reverse that trend by raising the prices of its online service. If that happens, Netflix’s earnings during the second half of this year might not shrink as much as management currently expects.
Assuming Blockbuster holds steady, Netflix expects its performance during the second half of the year to lag 2006’s pace. Management expects Netflix’s full-year profit to range from $42.4 million to $52.4 million, down from an April forecast of $55 million to $60 million. Netflix earned $35.4 million through the first half of this year.

The series, entitled “The Pride of October”, will debut on Wednesday, October 7, during TBS’ pregame show MLB On Deck, with expanded versions of the exclusive interviews running as interstitials between games and online at TBS Hot Corner on MLB.com.
"There's nothing else like October baseball," said Jackson. "Everything and everyone jumps up a notch - the competition, the fans, the intensity of every pitch. Reggie Jackson is one of the most dynamic postseason performers in baseball history. He played for 11 division champions, six pennant winners and five World Series champions. Nicknamed Mr. October for his clutch playoff hitting, he helped win three consecutive World Series titles with the Oakland Athletics in the early 1970s and two World Series with the New York Yankees in 1977 and 1978. His crowning achievement was his World Series performance against the L.A. Dodgers in 1977 in which Jackson hit a record five home runs - including his legendary three-home run feat in Game 6 - and knocked in eight RBI. He finished the series with a .450 average and 1.250 slugging percentage and was named the MVP.

After the Beautiful 23 years together, Regina Lasko married David Letterman. What a beautiful thing to say, especially since marriages among celebrities are such a conveyor belt thing. Considering that Regina Lasko has been with David Letterman for 23 years and they’re still going strong at it, one can easily say that this marriage is built on solid base. Regina became David Letterman’s girlfriend in 1989 and moved in with him in 2001. The couple are madly in love and live in North Salem, New York. They married in March, 2009. And as I have mentioned at the beginning, photos of Regina Lasko are rare, but we still have one for you to share. It’s not a wedding photo, those will probably never leak, but it’s still a cute picture of a (now married) couple in love. Happy married life to you, Regina Lasko and David Letterman. Prior to marrying Regina Lasko, Letterman was previously married for seven years to his college sweetheart,Congrats to the couple! Editor:sathish
1. Undertaker defeated C.M. Punk to win the World Hvt. Championship in a Hell in a Cell match in 10:25. Ross and Grisham noted how confident Punk looked despite the fact that he was about to face Taker in a HIAC match. Justin Roberts introduced the wrestlers once they were both in the ring. Grisham once again noted "the bravado" Punk was showing. 2. John Morrison pinned Dolph Ziggler to retain the Intercontinental Title in 15:45. Ross and Grisham on commentary again. The fans were quiet early on. Grisham asked Ross if he had any nicknames, then said he heard Vince McMahon call him something other than J.R. Funny. Ross said McMahon was nice enough to mention his BBQ sauce. 3. Mickie James pinned Alicia Fox to retain the WWE Divas Championship in 5:25. Cole and Lawler on commentary. There were some boring calls as the women traded offense at 4:00. Alicia hit a great Northern Lights Suplex for a nearfall. However, seconds later Mickie hit the DDT that dropped Fox awkwardly on her head. Mickie got the pin.
4. Chris Jericho and Big Show defeated Batista and Rey Mysterio to retain the Unified Tag Titles in 13:45. Mysterio and Jericho worked together early. Jericho tagged in Big Show. Mysterio teased tagging Batista, but decided to take it himself, which drew a nice ovation from the crowd. However, Show roughed him up immediately. 5. Randy Orton defeated John Cena in a Hell in a Cell match to win the WWE Championship in 21:25. A loud "RKO" chant broke out briefly as Orton took control of the offense at 2:45. Cena came back by ramming Orton's back into the fence. It looked weak. Orton came back and rammed Cena into the ring steps. 6. Drew McIntyre defeated R-Truth in 4:40. Ross and Grisham put over the story that Vince McMahon personally signed McIntyre. Truth hit some flashy offense early, but that wasn't enough to wake up the crowd, which didn't care about this one. The boring chants grew louder at 3:00. After some back and forth action, MyIntrye hit a double-arm DDT that appeared to pull Truth's head into his own chest and then got the win. 7. Kofi Kingston defeated The Miz and Jack Swagger in a Triple Threat match to retain the United States Championship in 7:55. Miz cut a heel promo on his way to the ring. He said he'd become the U.S. Champ, but the bad thing was that it had to happen in New Jersey. Kofi is no longer from Jamaica. He's now billed from Ghana in West Africa. Cole said Kofi is still heavily influenced by the Jamaican lifestyle. No, really, that's the explanation. 8. Triple H and Shawn Michaels defeated Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase in a Hell in a Cell match in 18:05. DX made their entrance first only to be attacked from behind by Cody and Ted while walking down the ramp. The heels roughed up DX briefly, but Hunter made his comeback less than a minute later. The teams continued to brawl around ringside and briefly into the crowd.

Her career began falling apart after two years due to injuries and a bigger controversy on the Kerrigan attack.
On 1994, she was involved related to the conspiracy to kill one of her competitors Nancy Kerrigan in the U.S. Championships. Her ex-husband and bodyguard hired Shane Stant to strike Kerrigan on her knee to force her out of the championship. Harding had won that event but was later found guilty.

Jackson's death brought a tragic end to a long, bizarre, sometimes farcical decline from his peak in the 1980s, when he was popular music's premier all-around performer, a uniter of black and white music who shattered the race barrier on MTV, dominated the charts and dazzled even more on stage.
He was perhaps the most exciting performer of his generation, known for his feverish, crotch-grabbing dance moves, his high-pitched voice punctuated with squeals and titters. His single sequined glove and tight, military-style jacket were trademarks second only to his ever-changing, surgically altered appearance. Over the years, his skin became lighter and his nose narrower.

David Letterman extortion Letterman video Youtube Letterman Joe Haldeman 48 hours. Details about David Letterman’s sexual dalliances with his co-workers/employees are emerging fast. He had admitted on his show last night that he had sexual relations with many of his employees.Joe Haldeman is a great writer. His novel, The Forever War, is an amazing piece of satire on the Vietnam War, comparable to Catch 22. It happens to be science fiction, but if you don’t read SF don’t let that stop you. You’ll be missing out.I heard that Joe will be in a documentary on Iraq war veterans on April 16 on PBS.
It’s called "Operation Homecoming" (part of the series "America at a Crossroads") and it tells the tale of the war through the words of soldiers. The trailer is on YouTube, and it looks to be a powerful show.Joe is a veteran of Vietnam Nam, and much of his work is based on his experience there. His writing influenced me when I was in high school, and I got a chance to meet him once or twice at conventions and such. He’s a good guy (and his wife, Gay, is maybe even nicer than he is, which is saying something). Someday I’ll write a good, detailed name-dropping post about them. It’s a funny story.

The 2016 Olympics announcement is coming shortly before 1:00 EST on Friday, October 2nd, and PopCrunch will be here to tell you if Chicago manages to land the 2016 Summer games.
The final pool of cities includes Chicago, Rio de Janeiro, Madrid and Tokyo. The applicants will be eliminated one by one in rounds of secret International Olympic Committee balloting until just one city stands alone. The interesting pick is probably Rio de Janeiro, as South America has never hosted an Olympic games, but the United States really pulled out all the stops for Chicago, with high profile Americans like Oprah Winfrey and President Barack Obama visiting Copenhagen to help with Chicago’s Olympic pitch.
In a hometown pitch for the world’s biggest sporting event, President Barack Obama lobbied Olympic leaders to give the 2016 Summer Games to Chicago, saying the U.S. “is ready and eager to assume that sacred trust.”
With just one day to go before the big vote, there are many judges on the International Olympic Committee who are still not sure where the Summer 2016 Games should be held. Rumor has it that this will be a very close race between Rio de Janeiro, Tokyo, Madrid, or Chicago.

Thousands of Egyptian mourners marched behind the coffin of the "martyr of the head scarf" yesterday -- a pregnant Muslim woman who was stabbed to death in a German courtroom as her young son watched.
Many in her homeland were outraged by the attack and saw the low-key response in Germany as an example of racism and anti-Muslim sentiment.
Her husband was critically wounded in the attack Wednesday in Dresden when he tried to intervene and was stabbed by the attacker and accidentally shot by court security.
"There is no god but God and the Germans are the enemies of God," chanted the mourners for 32-year-old Marwa al-Sherbini in her hometown of Alexandria, where her body was buried after being flown back from Germany.
"We will avenge her killing," her brother Tarek el-Sherbini told The Associated Press by telephone from the mosque where prayers were being recited in front of his sister's coffin. "In the West, they don't recognize us. There is racism."
Al-Sherbini, who was about four months pregnant and wore the Islamic head scarf, was involved in a court case against her neighbour for calling her a terrorist and was set to testify against him when he stabbed her 18 times inside the courtroom in front of her three-year-old son.
Her husband, who was in Germany on a research fellowship, came to her aid and was also stabbed by the neighbour and shot in the leg by a security guard who initially mistook him for the attacker, German prosecutors said. He is now in critical condition in a German hospital, according to al-Sherbini's brother.
"The guards thought that as long as he wasn't blond, he must be the attacker, so they shot him," al-Sherbini told an Egyptian television station.
The man, who has only been identified as 28-year-old Alex W., remains in detention and prosecutors have opened an investigation on suspicion of murder.
Christian Avenarius, the prosecutor in Dresden where the incident took place, described the killer as driven by a deep hatred of Muslims. "It was very clearly a xenophobic attack of a fanatical lone wolf."
He added that the attacker was a Russian of German descent who had immigrated to Germany in 2003 and had expressed his contempt for Muslims at the start of the trial.
At its regular news conference yesterday, a German government spokesman Thomas Steg said if the attack was racist, the government "naturally condemns this in the strongest terms."
The killing has dominated Egyptian media for days, while it has received comparatively little coverage in German and Western media.
A German Muslim group criticized government officials and the media for not paying enough attention to the crime.
"The incident in Dresden had anti-Islamic motives. So far, the reactions from politicians and media have been incomprehensibly meagre," Aiman Mazyek, the general secretary of the Central Council of Muslims, told Berlin's Tagesspiegel daily.
Egyptian commentators said the incident was an example of how hate crimes against Muslims are overlooked in comparison to those committed by Muslims against Westerners. Many commentators pointed to the uproar that followed the 2004 murder of filmmaker Theo van Gogh by a Dutch-born Islamic fundamentalist angry over one of his films criticizing the treatment of Muslim women.
Abdel Azeem Hamad, chief editor of the independent Egyptian dailyel-Shorouk,said that if the victim had been a Jew, there would have been an uproar.
"What we demand is just some attention to be given to the killing of a young innocent mother on the hands of fanatic extremist," he wrote in his column.
An Egyptian blogger Hicham Maged, wrote "let us play the 'What If' game."
"Just imagine if the situation was reversed and the victim was a Westerner who was stabbed anywhere in the world or -- God forbid -- in any Middle Eastern country by Muslim extremists," he said.
The Egyptian Pharmacists' Association called for a boycott of German drugs. The victim was a pharmacist.
According to numerous interviews in Egyptian local papers with el-Sherbini family, the man who stabbed al-Sherbini used to accuse her of being a "terrorist," and in one incident, he tried to take off her head scarf. Mourners at her funeral called her the "martyr of the head scarf."
Laila Shams, al-Sherbini's mother, told theel-Wafddaily that her daughter said she'd difficulty finding a job in Germany because of her head scarf.
"One (employer) suggested she remove her head scarf to get a job. She said no," she said.
All the hand wringing over the Friday launch of MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) on AT&T iPhones may be misplaced for a service that hasn't been a huge success on most other phones.
Apple let down iPhone watchers and owners when it announced in June that iPhone 3.0 software would support MMS but implied that AT&T would not yet allow it. The service launch was delayed several times, with exclusive carrier AT&T citing the need to make sure its network was ready. The feature will finally become generally available on AT&T iPhones on Friday when iTunes delivers a carrier settings update for the wildly popular phone. The carrier has said it expects "record volumes" of MMS traffic after the launch. MMS lets people send pictures, audio recordings, video clips or contact information along with an SMS (Short Message Service) message.
However, the service in question has been out for years on other handsets and hasn't exactly taken the mobile world by storm. In 2008, MMS made up just 2.5 percent of all messages sent from phones worldwide, meaning about 97.5 percent were SMS text messages, according to ABI Research. ABI expects the MMS share to grow to just 4.5 percent by 2014.
Given the amount of data that iPhone fans are already using on AT&T's network, for Web browsing, video, e-mail and social networking, it would take quite a popularity breakthrough for MMS to drag down the infrastructure through sheer traffic, analysts said. However, the carrier's fears in one respect may have been justified, said ABI analyst Dan Shey.
Several factors have dampened the popularity of MMS, according to analysts and industry observers. A big one is that the messages still don't always get through.
"Interoperability between carriers has always been an issue, and that's why MMS usage hasn't really taken off," Shey said. Delivering multimedia content from one phone and one network to another can be complicated with photos and gets even more involved when it comes to video, with large file sizes and multiple available formats, he said. What's attached in an MMS, 98 percent of the time, is just a picture, he said.
Another problem has been the complicated user interfaces on some phones and networks, which at times have forced senders to go through several steps to attach their content and recipients to go to a link within an SMS and provide a password along the way. The iPhone streamlines this process for iPhone users but not necessarily for the recipients of their messages.
The economics of MMS may not be attractive for either users or service providers. Even though each message uses a lot more network capacity than an SMS, which is limited to 160 characters of text, they typically count the same as an SMS against a bundled plan, Shey said. As a result, carriers haven't had an incentive to market the capability, he said.
And users of advanced phones now have alternatives to being charged for sharing content with their friends. For example, it's possible to post a photo to a Facebook page directly through Facebook's iPhone application.
Carriers will eventually figure out a way to monetize user sharing of content, but it probably won't be through MMS, said Mark Jacobstein, CEO of iSkoot, at the Mobilize conference earlier this month in San Francisco. Jacobstein is a serial entrepreneur in the mobile data world whose current company develops a variety of phone software. "The problem is not demand but implementation," he said.
The increase in MMS traffic from iPhone users isn't likely to put a much greater strain on AT&T's network, said In-Stat infrastructure analyst Allen Nogee. The carrier's current woes stem from having to deploy new base stations for 3G while selling a hugely popular handset that subscribers love to use for data, he said. Most customers won't just send one big MMS after another and overload the network, Nogee said.
However, AT&T may have had good reason to make sure its infrastructure was ready for MMS, ABI's Shey said. Even if the new feature doesn't swallow huge amounts of overall capacity, all those messages eventually need to be separated out and sent through an exchange point called an MMSC (MMS service center). AT&T's engineers may have set up that infrastructure for a smaller number of messages and then faced the prospect of MMS becoming possible on all iPhones.
If they learned anything from the experience of watching data traffic grow exponentially after the iPhone itself hit the market, they may have wanted to beef up the MMS portion of their system before the new feature hit all those phones, Shey said.
"All operators are just fanatic about ensuring that their network is not overutilized," Shey said. "I'm sure the network folks got involved and said, 'We'd better test this.'"
In 2009, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) celebrates its 25th anniversary. Since its inception a quarter century ago, NBCAM has been at the forefront of promoting awareness of breast cancer issues and has evolved along with the national dialogue on breast cancer. Today, NBCAM recognizes that although many great strides have been made in breast cancer awareness and treatment, there remains much to be accomplished. As NBCAM celebrates its 25th anniversary, they remain dedicated to educating and empowering women to take charge of their own breast health by practicing regular self-breast exams to identify any changes, scheduling regular visits and annual mammograms with their healthcare provider, adhering to prescribed treatment and knowing the facts about recurrence. The third Friday in October each year is National Mammography Day, first proclaimed by President Clinton in 1993. On this day, or throughout the month, women are encouraged to make a mammography appointment. In 2009, National Mammography Day will be celebrated on October 16.

World news:JAKARTA, Indonesia – A powerful earthquake struck western Indonesia on Wednesday, triggering landslides and trapping thousands under collapsed buildings — including two hospitals, an official said. At least 75 bodies were found, but the toll was expected to be far higher.
The temblor started fires, severed roads and cut off power and communications to Padang, a coastal city of 900,000 on Sumatra island. Thousands fled in panic, fearing a tsunami.
Buildings swayed hundreds of miles (kilometers) away in neighboring Malaysia and Singapore.
In the sprawling low-lying city of Padang, the shaking was so intense that people crouched or sat on the street to avoid falling. Children screamed as an exodus of thousands tried to get away from the coast in cars and motorbikes, honking horns.
The magnitude 7.6 quake hit at 5:15 p.m. (1015GMT, 6:15 a.m. EDT), just off the coast of Padang, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. It occurred a day after a killer tsunami hit islands in the South Pacific and was along the same fault line that spawned the 2004 Asian tsunami that killed 230,000 people in 11 nations.
A tsunami warning was issued Wednesday for countries along the Indian Ocean, but was lifted after about an hour; there were no reports of giant waves.
The temblor flattened buildings and felled trees in Padang, damaged mosques and hotels and crushed cars. A foot could be seen sticking out from one pile of rubble. In the gathering darkness shortly after the quake, residents fought some fires with buckets of water and used their bare hands to search for survivors, pulling at the wreckage and tossing it away piece by piece.
"People ran to high ground. Houses and buildings were badly damaged," said Kasmiati, who lives on the coast near the quake's epicenter.
"I was outside, so I am safe, but my children at home were injured," she said before her cell phone went dead. Like many Indonesians, she uses one name.
The loss of telephone service deepened the worries of those outside the stricken area.
"I want to know what happened to my sister and her husband," said Fitra Jaya, who owns a house in downtown Padang and was in Jakarta when the quake hit. "I tried to call my family there, but I could not reach anyone at all."
Initial reports received by the government said 75 people were killed, but the real number is "definitely higher," Vice President Jusuf Kalla told reporters in the capital, Jakarta. "It's hard to tell because there is heavy rain and a blackout," he said.
Health Minister Siti Fadilah Supari told MetroTV that two hospitals and a mall collapsed in Padang.
"This is a high-scale disaster, more powerful than the earthquake in Yogyakarta in 2006 when more than 3,000 people died," Supari said, referring to a major city on the main Indonesian island of Java.
Hospitals struggled to treat the injured as their relatives hovered nearby.
Indonesia's government announced $10 million in emergency response aid and medical teams and military planes were being dispatched to set up field hospitals and distribute tents, medicine and food rations. Members of the Cabinet were preparing for the possibility of thousands of deaths.
Rustam Pakaya, head of the Health Ministry's crisis center, said "thousands of people are trapped under the collapsed houses."
"Many buildings are badly damaged, including hotels and mosques," said Wandono, an official at the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency in Jakarta, citing reports from residents.
Kalla said the worst-affected area was Pariaman, a coastal town about 40 miles (60 kilometers) northwest of Padang. He gave no details on destruction or deaths there.
Local television reported more than two dozen landslides. Some blocked roads, causing miles-long traffic jams of cars and trucks.
On Tuesday, a powerful earthquake off the South Pacific islands of Samoa, American Samoa and Tonga — thousands of miles from Indonesia — spawned tsunami that killed more than 100 people. Experts said the seismic events were not related.
Both Indonesia's Aceh province, which was devastated in the 2004 tsunami with 130,000 dead, and Padang lie along the same fault. It runs the along the west coast of Sumatra and is the meeting point of the Eurasian and Pacific tectonic plates, which have been pushing against each other for millions of years, causing huge stress to build up.
Scientists have long suggested Padang would suffer a similar fate to Aceh in the coming decades. Some predictions said 60,000 people would be killed — mostly by giant waves generated by an undersea quake.
The dire predictions spread alarm across Padang, which was struck by an earthquake in 2007 that killed dozens of people.
Indonesia, a vast archipelago with more than 17,000 islands and a population of 235 million, straddles continental plates and is prone to seismic activity along what is known as the Pacific Ring of Fire.
